James N. Topper, M.D., Ph.D.

James N. Topper, M.D., Ph.D. has been Chairman of the Board for Arête Therapeutics since its inception. Dr. Topper joined Frazier Healthcare in 2003 as a Venture Partner and became a General Partner in 2005. Prior to joining Frazier Healthcare, he served as Head of the cardiovascular research and development franchise at Millennium Pharmaceuticals and ran Millennium San Francisco (formerly COR Therapeutics). Prior to the merger of COR and Millennium, Dr. Topper served as Vice President of Biology at COR and was responsible for managing all of its research activities. He served on the faculties of Stanford Medical School and Harvard Medical School prior to joining COR, where he functioned as a Clinician, Instructor and Basic Investigator. Dr. Topper currently serves on the boards of Amicus Therapeutics, Calistoga Pharmaceuticals, Intradigm Corporation, La Jolla Pharmaceuticals (LJPC), MacuSight Inc., and Zelos Therapeutics, Inc., and is an observer on the boards of Point Biomedical and Portola Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Topper is also an Advisory Board Member to the Harvard-Partners Center for Genetics and Genomics. Dr. Topper received his M.D. and Ph.D. in Biophysics from Stanford University School of Medicine.

Hal Barron, M.D.
Senior Vice President of Development, Chief Medical Officer, Genentech Inc.
Cardiologist, UCSF Medical Center

Hal Barron, M.D. is Senior Vice President of Development and Chief Medical Officer of Genentech Inc. In this role, he oversees the preclinical and phase 1 through 4 clinical activities, including drug safety, pharmacovigilance and regulatory affairs. Dr. Barron is also the Co-Chair of the product portfolio planning committee at Genentech. Prior to joining Genentech in 1996, Dr. Barron received his B.S. in physics from Washington University in St. Louis, his M.D. from Yale University and completed his training in medicine and cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Barron’s academic positions include Associate Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine/Cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco. He has been issued several patents for his work in thrombosis and angiogenesis and has published more than 90 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Dan Janney, M.B.A.
Managing Director, Alta Partners

Dan Janney is a Managing Director of Alta Partners, and Co-Founder of Alta BioPharma. Mr. Janney is responsible for investments in biopharmaceutical products and therapeutics. Prior to joining Alta, he was a Senior Investment Banker at Montgomery Securities, focusing on life sciences companies. He serves on the Board of Directors of a number of companies, including Alba Therapeutics, Kemia, Phenomix Corporation and ViroBay. Mr. Janney is a member of the Advisory Board for the Rebecca and John Moores Cancer Center at University of California, San Diego. He holds a B.A. in History from Georgetown University and an M.B.A. from the Anderson School at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Richard Lin, M.D., M.B.A.
Partner, Three Arch Partners

Richard Lin, M.D. is a Partner with Three Arch Partners, a venture capital firm. Dr. Lin co-founded Spiration where he was a Co-Inventor of the primary technology. Dr. Lin trained in general surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, and was a Research Scientist at the UCSF, School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. He has authored sixteen peer reviewed articles and numerous abstracts. Dr. Lin has a B.S. in Biology from Stanford University where he graduated with honors and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School where he graduated Cum Laude. While at Harvard, Dr. Lin was named a Howard Hughes Scholar. He also has an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business where he was named as an Arjay Miller Scholar.

James H. Sabry, M.D., Ph.D.
President and Chief Executive Officer, Arête Therapeutics

James H. Sabry, M.D., Ph.D. is President and Chief Executive Officer of Arête Therapeutics and brings more than 20 years of drug discovery management and clinical expertise to the company. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors and former CEO of Cytokinetics, a company he co-founded in August 1997. Prior to co-founding Cytokinetics, Dr. Sabry held faculty positions at the University of California, San Francisco and Harvard Medical School. He serves on the Board of Directors of HopeLab, a not-for-profit organization developing innovative technologies for the management of cancer, obesity and other diseases, is a member of Dean’s Council of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and serves on the Advisory Boards of numerous organizations including the California Institute of Quantitative Biosciences. Dr. Sabry received an M.D. from Queen’s University and a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the University of California, San Francisco.

Donald J. Santel
Former Chief Executive Officer, CoTherix

Donald J. Santel was Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at CoTherix, Inc., where he launched Ventavis® Inhalation Solution and led the sale of the company to Actelion Pharmaceuticals, Ltd. in January 2007. Prior to CoTherix, Mr. Santel served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Reflow, and sold the company to Fox Hollow (now EV3) and served as Vice President of Marketing and International Sales at Cardiac Pathways Corporation, a medical device company later acquired by Boston Scientific. Mr. Santel began his career at Medtronic, Inc. Currently, Mr. Santel also serves on the board of Anthera Pharmaceuticals, ChemGenex Pharmaceuticals, and Hyperion Therapeutics. He has a B.S.E. from Purdue University and an M.S. in from the University of Minnesota.
